Can you imagine telling someone you want to build a real, authentic, genuine friendship but you don’t wanna get to know them? How can we trust someone we don’t truly get to know? This is true for our relationship with God. God reveals Himself in His Word, and it’s His invitation for us to draw near Him and understand Him more. It’s through intimacy and trust that you begin to know a person. To know God doesn’t stop at reading His Word but about experiencing His Presence first-hand for yourself, recognizing His voice, and trusting Him fully.
I didn’t grow up in church, but everything changed when I gave my life to God. I begin to hunger for God, spending time in His Presence, desiring to know Him. Here’s the thing: I just wanted to know His voice, what He liked and disliked, and how He spoke. I was on a quest to understand God. This shaped and influenced my life and allowed me to recognize the truth. When I overheard conversations, or if someone was like, “The Lord told me, XYZ,” I can discern and test because:
- I spent time with God personally.
- I know what His Word says, and He would not speak contrary to His Word
- I knew His voice and how He spoke to Me.

Intimacy and Trust
When I was learning the Lord’s voice and about Him, I was becoming close with Him and becoming familiar with His voice. That was intimacy! Intimacy is closeness, familiarity, or friendship. The closer we are to God, the more we trust Him.
Those who know your name trust in you. Psalm 9:10
Key Scripture: Psalm 19
Today, we will be walking through Psalm 19: 7-9. These verses will highlight the power and work of the Word of God and give you a fresh look into how intimacy and trust grow when you spend time with the Word of God.

Throughout the book of Psalms, David used several words to describe or refer to the Word of God, such as law, testimony, precepts, rules, statutes, commandments, fear, and judgment.
Psalm 19:7
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul
The Word of God is perfect. So, when you spend time with Him, you are engaging with the perfection of His truth. His Word revives, refreshes, and restores our soul, and in His presence, your soul finds rest. The Lord gives life, peace, and renewal.
Psalm 19:7
the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple
The Word is reliable and certain, and when you spend time with God, He’s reliable, and you can place your full trust in Him. In the presence of the Lord, you gain wisdom. When you come to the Lord, you meet the God of wisdom.
Psalm 19:8
the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart
The Word of the Lord is morally right, practically right, and universally right; it’s right because it’s the revelation of a God who is Holy, True, and always right. When you spend time with God, He makes you right, smoothes you out, straightens you, you become upright, and your mind, thoughts, and ways become right. You find actual joy and pleasure in the truth of God and in your relationship with God when the truth is revealed.
Psalm 19:8
the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes
God’s Word comes from God, who is Holy and Pure, and the Word itself is pure. We don’t have to worry that His Word would lead us to sin or impurity. One thing about purity is that it enlightens the eyes. It brings light to your perspective and your vision. When your vision is clouded and dark, the Word and your relationship with God bring light to them.
Psalm 19:9
the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever
The fear of the Lord is deeply connected to the awe and majesty of God Himself. When you spend time with God, engage the Word, and meet with Him, you grow in your knowledge and appreciation of God and His Majesty. In relationship with the Word, you are made clean.
The Word will never fade. God has no beginning or end. He will not diminish; we can be happy and glad to have a relationship with an eternal, everlasting God.
Psalm 19:9
the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether
God’s Word is just and fair; every Word He speaks is truth, including what He says about you. When He says, “I formed you, I knew you, you are fearfully and wonderfully made,” He speaks all truth!
Recap
I think Charles Spurgeon words will summarize our talk on intimacy and trust with the Word of God. This is what he says, “Imagine not that to sit at Jesus’ feet is a very small, unmeaning thing. (Coming to the Word) means peace, for they who submit to Jesus find peace through his precious, blood. (The Word of God) means holiness, for those who learn of Jesus learn no sin, but are instructed in things lovely and of good repute. (Coming to the Word) It means strength, for they that sit with Jesus, and feed upon him, are girded with his, strength; the joy of the Lord is their strength. It means wisdom, for they that learn of the Son of God understand more than the ancients, because they keep his statutes. It means zeal, for the love of Christ fires hearts that live upon it, and they that are much with Jesus become like Jesus, so that the zeal of the Lord’s house eats them up.””
*My personal inserts to bring home our point because I thought it was so good.
