How to Begin Withdrawing to Pray for a Healthier, Happier You

Life’s Demands Require Spiritual Strength

We all know life throws endless cycles of demands at us, including work, relationships, parenting, health, and more. In addition, our obsessive desire to go viral on social media has become a measure of success, and the temptation to chase visibility and approval is strong. Even though social media wasn’t around during Jesus’s day, fame and popularity were, but He modeled something different: He withdraw to pray.

Jesus’ Example: Let Pressure Push You to Prayer

In Luke 5, Jesus withdraw to pray during increasing publicity and demands. The demands of life pushed Jesus to prayer, not away from it. It was His custom to withdraw; it must become ours, too.

Allow the demands of life to push you to pray, not away. You will never be able to cope with life’s demands without being recharged in God’s presence. In prayer, there are fresh supplies of light and power from God. Prayer isn’t a last alternative; it’s the foundation for dealing with life’s demands with strength and grace.

The Power of God’s Presence

I cannot say it enough, but Jesus made it His custom, and it was His practice and habit to withdraw to pray. When you practice the presence, this means a lifestyle of continual conscious communion with God in all matters of life; you are:

• Strengthened in God’s Presence

• Encouraged and uplifted

• Empowered by the Holy Spirit to face life with courage and peace

• Able to approach life’s demands with confidence and wholeness

No one faced more pressure or demands than Jesus yet He never let them pull Him away from God. Instead, He leaned into prayer.

When to Withdraw and Pray

Below are a list of life demands you might be able to relate too. Allow this to be your signal, that it is time to step away and seek God’s guidance so you may show up more successful, at peace, more whole, and a healthier version of yourself in these spaces:

Parenting – All imma say is, raising kids requires a different level of patience, wisdom, and grace.

Infertility – My friend would describe infertility as a “soul-crushing word.” You go through so much emotional and physical toll during this time.

Work-Life Balance – We are all still trying to master this one right here, without burnout.

Relationships—Navigating friendships, family dynamics, and romantic relationships hits different in 2025 and requires much work and effort in today’s society.

Caregiving – Caring for loved ones without becoming depleted is no easy fine.

Grief – Losing a loved one or navigating the aftermath and different stages of loss.

Foster Parenting – The emotional and practical demands of fostering.

Self-Improvement and Self-Care — How do we continue to evolve while maintaining peace and balance?

Entrepreneurship—The demands of running or even starting a business is taxing on our emotional, physical, and mental health.

• Health – Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirt and we are called to manage while on earth, so taking care of your physical and mental well-being is essential.

Societal Pressure – Resisting the urge to conform to unhealthy cultural norms.

With every demand comes an invitation to pause and come to Jesus.

How to Create a Withdrawing Place

1. Withdraw/Separate Yourself – The car is a good place to go, but go anywhere free from distractions. Turn off your phone and detach for a moment.

2. Surrender Your Burdens—Identify what’s weighing on you and decide to give it to Him completely.

3. Be Still Before the Lord – “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Let God’s truth settle your heart.

4. Use Small Moments – We already know life is chaotic, so steal away for a minute — even if it’s in the bathroom — to take a deep breath and pray.

A Practical Prayer Strategy (P.R.A.Y.)

Pause – Start by stopping. Sit quietly, still your mind, and focus on God’s presence. Pausing reminds you to be present and recenter your scattered thoughts.

Rejoice – When you pause, rejoicing is a natural outflow because you begin to think about who you are coming to for strength. Thank God for who He is and what He’s done. Rejoicing corrects your perspective.

Ask – When you reach the point of making your request, your heart is softened and positioned differently. Once you’ve paused and rejoiced, bring your needs to God with an open heart.

Yield – Surrender and submit your will to God. So, wherever you feel Him leading, follow Him.
