This blog is all about the illusion of godliness from the perspective of having an appearance of godliness and it challenges us to reflect on whether our outward acts of devotion can sometimes mask a lack of true spiritual transformation.
Recently, the Lord has reminded me of His goodness and mercies towards me, bringing to mind my 23-year-old self when the first idea of Life in God was born. I remember being so unsure of myself yet filled with such a zeal for God and a vision far greater than I was prepared to walk in.
At that time, I did not realize how much more maturing I needed. A young girl, professing godliness outwardly while living a double life I realized that I had to grow up for Life in God. During that time, I cared more about pleasing people than pleasing God, and as a result, found myself in situations that contradicted my witness and exposed a hypocritical pattern.
I share this not point fingers or present myself as perfect, but to be real and honest. I am not here to teach one thing and live another way. Today, I have come to the place of devotion to the Lord, where I find joy in godly fellowship, delight in living for Christ, and continuously practicing what I am talking about today.
Key Scripture
“having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” 2 Timothy 3:5
This verse warns about having “a form of godliness but denying its power” and to avoid such people. My question today for you is this: Are you just going through the motions, or are we living in the fullness of God’s truth and power?
What is the illusion of godliness? It’s about having an appearance of godliness but not true spiritual transformation.
The Idea of Illusion
This idea reflects the disconnect between how we appear to be and the reality of our lives, and I want to present it in several ways.
First, too often, we live one way, but it doesn’t match our reality. This is what it means to have the appearance of godliness. What we present outwardly doesn’t always align with the inner truth of our lives. It’s easy to fall into routines, appearances, or traditions. And that can sometimes cause us to unintentionally lose sight of the power of God in our day-to-day lives.
This creates a distorted version of faith—one that becomes more about external actions and less about the internal work and relationship with God. However, when we choose to move, live beyond the illusion, and fully embrace His power, our perception shifts, bringing our reality closer to the abundant life He has called us to. The blessed life He calls us to and, importantly, closer to reflecting His character and nature in our own life.

The Deception of Illusion
So, you are perceived as godly and full of the spirit to the natural eye, but your life doesn’t reflect that. You don’t live that. You lie, you gossip, you live a double life. This is the illusion of godliness.
Illusions play tricks on our eyes, and they are tactics of deception used by the enemy. The enemy presents things that appear good—just as he did with the fruit in the Garden. He told Eve she would be like God, knowing good and evil. The fruit itself wasn’t bad, but because God had commanded them not to eat it, the truth was that she shouldn’t and she would surely die. The real consequence was death, yet the enemy deceived her into believing she would live.
In our modern day, this looks like TV shows that are really good and engaging but promote and normalize adultery or music that has a nice beat and flow but is full of cussing and lacks substance. The Bible reminds us, “Bad fruit cannot produce good fruit.”
I really love how the Blue Letter Bible explains this thought, “In our self-obsessed world, people feel very free to have a “salad bar” religion — they pick and choose what they want. They feel free to be very “spiritual,” but sense no obligation to be Biblical.”
Are We Missing the Truth
In addressing “Are we missing the truth?”, we might consider how distractions, complacency, or even fear can prevent us from fully surrendering to God’s power.
The power we are discussing is meant to influence our behavior, choices, and actions directly. However, many today deny the power and reject the principles and commands of God. We prefer self-governance.
It’s not just about avoiding these behaviors yourself but also about considering the company you keep around you. If we spend time with people like this, they will influence us. Consider 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: evil company corrupts good habits.”
If you are wondering what types of people we refer to, read the description in 2 Timothy 3-2-5.

Stepping Out of Illusions
This isn’t about performing rituals or adhering to traditions; it’s about experiencing His presence in a way that renews us from the inside out and impacts every aspect of our lives.
Today, I want us to move past the surface together, where we are no longer just attending church or saying the right things. Instead, we are stepping into the true power of God that transforms lives, hearts, and minds. Here’s how we’re doing it:
#1 Delight in the Lord
Life offers many joys and pleasures, but true delight is found in the Lord. Let your inner being take delight, pleasure, and enjoyment in God. Often, our reason for not finding delight in the Lord is because we do not know Him, and we don’t know Him because we don’t spend time with Him. I recently talked with my kids about what it means to have ‘godly fun’, and I want you to know that true fun and lasting pleasure can be found in God.
#2 Guard Your Heart
Watch what you entertain, listen to, and allow into your heart. Protect your heart by carefully considering the activities you engage in, the conversations you have, and the messages you consume. When you find yourself leading and making decisions with your heart, let God’s Word and His truth fill it. So that His Word will be the outpouring of what’s in your heart, which happens naturally when you protect it.
#3 Set Your Affections on The Lord
Setting our affections is all about having a constant reminder of heavenly and spiritual things. Study the Word and things of God deeply so that they become stored in your heart; as a believer, your actions and ways must align with Heaven. From this place, you realize you have Heaven’s access and influence in your life.
#4 Do What God Says
Practice the Word of God in your life. Take this phrase, “Work the Word of God in your life; live it out loudly.” Ask the Holy Spirit to genuinely help you be obedient because some commands will challenge you. For example, when you see a command in Scripture about pride and is challenged to live from the place of humility, it can be difficult to make that switch. It’s hard because the thought of being quiet or holding back may seem like weakness, but it’s actually a sign of Godly strength.
Practically, How To Do These Things:
- Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in all things.
- Spend time in the Word of God and just get to know Him.
- Approach learning God’s ways with the same discipline, joy, and focus that you might apply to learning a TikTok dance.
- When you see instructions in the Bible, figure out how they relate to your life and do it. Don’t make up excuses or build a defense case against them. Rather, embrace and “work the Word” in your daily choices.
