Beyond Casual Faith: Living From the Secret Place

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” – Psalm 91:1

Do you ever feel like you’re going through the motions with God, yet deep inside your heart is tugging for more?

That’s where I’ve been. The Spirit has been leading me to the secret place, and I’ve been asking Him, What does the secret place look like in my everyday life? This blog is my way of pointing you to Jesus, the only One who can reveal that to you.

The Call to “More”

I know there’s more to walking with Him. More to representing Him well. More to living in His power and grace. And I believe He’s calling us out of casual faith into deeper fellowship.

Maybe you feel that tug for more, too. No more going through the motions, making excuses, and laziness. There’s more to our walk with Him, more of knowing who He is, more of being in His presence, more of living in the power He’s called us to demonstrate, model, and share.

For me, that “more” looks like:

  • More of His presence
  • More worship
  • More discipline
  • More grace
  • More patience
  • More joy
  • Just… more

Friend, I don’t want you to simply survive your Christian walk. I’m believing for personal revival, in you, in me, in all of us. The “more” is birthed, revealed, and sustained in the secret place.

What is the Secret Place?

The secret place isn’t a religious cliché or a place we talk about casually. It’s not about performance or public show; it’s about His glory being revealed in you.

It’s where hidden wisdom is imparted:

“But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory… what no eye has seen, nor ear heard… what God has prepared for those who love him.” – 1 Corinthians 2:7-9 (ESV)

It’s where you move beyond just hearing about Jesus to truly encountering Him, knowing Him in a real and lived experience.

If anyone defines ‘encounters’ in a way that captures the weight and wonder of God’s presence, it’s Apostle Joshua Selman. His teaching is unmatched. He says, “encounters are spiritual experiences that make a person or an idea real to you, that is no longer theoretical. It crystallizes the reality of a person, the reality of an ideology to your spirit to your heart, producing conviction so that you are persuaded beyond doubt, beyond turning back.”

My Story – Learning to Break Away

Recently, I felt prompted to pursue the secret place more intentionally. My husband even suggested a family shut-in, and I thought, Yes, that’s it. Even if we didn’t do it that weekend, I was determined to do something.

I planned to wake up at 1:00 a.m. for prayer. But I went to bed at 10 p.m., and when the alarm went off… I stayed in bed. Thankfully, God is so gracious, merciful, and kind; He still met me.

Later that day, while cleaning, I stepped into our guest room and felt led to pray in the closet. It’s a small, slightly cluttered space, but I turned it into an opportunity to meet with Him. There, the Lord ministered to me and revealed things to my heart.

That day, I decided to break away at the top of every hour, committing at least 30 minutes to Him. By the end of the day, I felt His confirmation: This is it. This is the rhythm I’m inviting you into.

The atmosphere in our home shifted. Irritation and frustration with my children turned into joy and creativity. We ended the day making homemade pizza together, something I hadn’t planned, but it flowed out of the peace I had found in Him.

This was on a Saturday and this may not be what He’s calling you to, but seek Him for what He’s leading you into and follow.

Lessons from the Secret Place

Here’s what I learned:

  • Break away and seek the Lord’s presence.
  • Let Him reveal the direction He’s leading you, then follow it.
  • This is personal; only God can show you what your secret place looks like.

For me, the secret place is daily break-away moments. It’s living from His presence as a lifestyle, through and through.

Psalm 91 calls the dwelling place the “the home of man.” Complete security in Him. The “shadow of the Almighty” speaks of walking so close to Him that His presence covers you. It’s an expression of great nearness. One must walk very near to a companion for their shadow to fall on them. The charge is to walk very close to God, every day, throughout the day.

I’m reminded of one of my favorite verses, and it’s my prayer for you today:

“Teach me Your way, O LORD, that I may walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name.” – Psalm 86:11

Why Does This Matters for You

The secret place changes everything!

It loosens the grip the world has on you. The shows you watch, the pleasures you enjoy, the conversations you have, the words you speak, the attitudes you carry, the pride and self-indulgence you once entertained loses its grip.

It loosens sin’s hold, and even death loses its sting because you come to understand that death is not an exit, it’s an entrance into new life. To have more of Jesus you must die to self and comfort. Death is the way to more of Jesus.

Summary:

  • The secret place loosens the world’s grip on your heart.
  • It kills casual Christianity and self-indulgence.
  • It shifts your perspective on death; it’s no longer an exit, but an entrance into more of Jesus.

This is why believers in Acts lived with such boldness and power; they knew the Holy Spirit intimately. And we can too.

Your Call to Action

Friend, don’t settle for “just enough” faith. Be hungry for His presence. Long to know Him, reflect Him and to delight in Him.

There’s a greater life in Christ that’s often overlooked, the abundant life! The call is to seek Him. Find the secret place today. Let the Lord lead you into a new way of living.

As 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

We cannot live mediocre, careless, casual lives. He’s calling us to live from His presence, a life that reflects Him.

Ask Him today:

  • What does the secret place look like for me?
  • How do I walk closely with you?

A Closing Prayer

Lord, teach us to dwell in Your secret place. Remove every distraction that keeps me from You. Draw us into Your presence and help us live from it every day. Let our life reflect You in all we do. Amen.
