The Glory of God and the Weight of Our Words
There are moments when something slips out of our mouths, and when it does, we wish we could pull it back. Too often, it’s words spoken too quickly, carelessly, and without discernment.
Recently, I caught myself saying something foolish:
“If I’m lying, I’m going to hell.”
The moment it left my lips, my spirit was disturbed. That was not truth. It was not wisdom, nor was it reverence for the work of Jesus.
And I repented.
Words Are Never Neutral
Have you ever said something you thought was harmless, only to realize later how careless it was?
How many times have we spoken loosely, jokingly, casually, and not realizing the weight carried in our words? Clearly, you see I have.
Scripture reminds us that we will give an account for every idle Word (Matthew 12:36). And that truth is not to shame us, but to align us.
When Conviction Comes, We Do Not Hide—We Turn
When the revelation of conviction comes, it is not to send us into hiding. Rather, to draw us toward the Lord.
Conviction is an invitation to turn, to confess, to ask the Father for forgiveness, and to realign our hearts and our mouths with truth. We do not remain in shame. We receive grace, not condemnation.

And then, we let truth be on our lips. We become intentional with our words, and replace what was spoken carelessly with what is eternally true.
We begin to speak truth over our lives:
Eternal life with Jesus is my destiny and my portion.
Not hell.
Nor the grave.
But Jesus.

Our Words Must Walk Worthy of the Lord
As I was writing, I remembered the book of Colossians.
In Colossians 1:9–10, Paul prays that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will, so that we may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work.
Our words are not exempt from this call because our words bear fruit. That means:
- Words can glorify God
- Words can grieve the Spirit
- Words can point people to Jesus or away from Him
When we use foolish language, careless, idle, unrestrained speech, we are not walking in a manner worthy of the Lord, nor are our words pleasing to Him. Everything we do and everything we speak should flow from a desire to please the Father.
That requires awareness. To keep Him at the forefront of our minds and remain conscious of His presence among us. This produces a heart that cares about what we speak. As if we are sitting face-to-face with Him, as ones who are living before God, and not apart from Him.
Put Off the Old—Including the Way We Speak
Paul makes this even clearer later:
“But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.” — Colossians 3:8
This is an instruction, not a suggestion. We are called to put off the old self and its practices, including the way we speak. Careless words belong to the old life. Foolish speech belongs to the former way. But we have been given a new life in Christ.
Let the Word of Christ Dwell in You Richly
The remedy is not silence; it is indwelling truth.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… and whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.” — Colossians 3:16–17
When the Word of Christ dwells richly within us, our words change. Truth shapes our speech. Reverence guards our mouths.
When Christ dwells richly in us, His glory finds expression through our words. Jesus is exalted, and not contradicted, by what we say.

What Do We Do When We Speak Carelessly?
We do not justify it, nor excuse it, we repent.
Repentance is not just saying “I’m sorry.” Repentance is a turning.
- We turn from careless speech
- We turn toward truth
- We change how we speak
- We become intentional
We thank Jesus for forgiveness. We acknowledge Him as our Intercessor. And we put truth back on our lips because the mouth speaks from what fills the heart. (1 Timothy 2:5; Matthew 12:34)
If truth is not in us, truth will not come out of us.
A Call to Repentance and Gratitude
So today, repent.
Repent for foolish words, and idle speech.
Repent for moments when your words did not reflect truth or honor Christ.
And then thank Jesus. Thank You, Jesus, for standing in the gap for us, for interceding when we have spoken foolishly and idly.
Thank You for mercy when conviction pierced our hearts.
Let truth be on our lips.
Let Your Word dwell in us richly.
And let our words bring glory to God.

Be Careful What You Come Into Agreement With
Our words carry agreement.
What we speak can align us with:
- Truth or deception
- Life or death
- Light or darkness
And I refuse to come into agreement with:
- Hell
- Lies
- Darkness
- Manipulation
- Deception
- Anything contrary to eternal life in Christ
The Word tells us that life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21).
And like I had to repent for speaking death over myself, even unintentionally, so do you.
The Glory of God Is Revealed Through Truth-Filled Words
The glory of God is His presence made known, His character revealed, His nature displayed, His truth manifested among us. And one of the primary ways His glory is revealed is through what comes out of our mouths.
Jesus said that the mouth speaks from the abundance of the heart. That means our words become visible evidence of what, or who, we are dwelling in.
When our words are careless, foolish, or idle, they misrepresent the God we claim to know. But when our words are truthful, reverent, and aligned with Christ, they point people to Jesus.
That is glory.
Glory Requires Alignment, Not Casual Speech
God’s glory and careless language cannot coexist.
To glorify God means:
- We speak in awareness of His presence
- We honor the finished work of Christ
- We refuse words that contradict eternal truth
This is why conviction is mercy. The Holy Spirit convicts us not to shame or condemn us, but to protect the glory of God in and through our lives.
When we repent and realign our speech, we are not just correcting behavior; we are restoring witness.
Our words begin to testify again.
The glory of God is revealed when our words agree with His truth and honor His Son.
A Prayer for You
Lord, be merciful to me because of Jesus, for Your name’s sake.
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord.” — Psalm 19:14
Guard our mouth.
Guard our heart.
Let Your Kingdom be on our lips, today and forevermore.
Make this personal, may my words speak life over me, my family, and my children, in the name of Jesus
