Inviting God Into Your Life: Practical Steps for a Stronger Faith

This post is about how inviting God into every part of your life.

I came across this saying: “The key to getting to know God better is to spend time with him, and it doesn’t have to look a certain way. The key is to invite him into your life.” So, I started to be reminded that when we invite the God into our lives, we invite Him into our parenting style, decision-making, and emotions. Then, these questions came to mind: what does the Word of God say? How can we find encouragement, safety, and security in the Bible? Then it hit me: When you seek His truth and understanding of things and questions in your life, you invite God in. We must not only allow God to guide us but allow Him to conform us.

The phrase, “Invite God into every aspect of your life,” shouldn’t be seen as a lofty ambition, like waking up at the crack of dawn to pray if you know it’s not realistic for you. Rather, it is about welcoming Him into every part of your life, from the most mundane to the extraordinary, which is the essence of surrender. Surrendering and inviting Him in helps you acknowledge that you are not in control but want Him to be in control. Inviting the Lord’s truth, ways, and understanding means letting go of your own truth, knowledge, and emotions. When you decide to do that, you no longer strive to do things in your own efforts. So, the daily question becomes, what do you say about this Holy Spirit? What are you looking to speak to me, Holy Spirit?

Inviting God In Is More Than Words

“Having a strong set of beliefs, faith is one thing. But standing up tall on them, making decisions according to them, and adjusting your life to line up with them, that’s faithfulness.” – Priscilla Shirer.

If you feel like you rarely know Him, perhaps because you know or trust many other things. So many of us know the Word and what the Bible says, but we don’t know His heart. You can’t merely know about Him. Knowing about church formality or what sounds pleasing to the natural ear is insufficient. You may know things about God, but you don’t live nor experience His power in your life. While knowing about Him is the start, it’s about knowing Him intimately, personally, and deeply. It’s about encounters with God and being grounded and rooted in Him.

6 Practical Ways to Invite God Into Your Life and Grow in Faith

#1 Presence-centered Living.

Presence-centered Living. You begin to know God more when you center your life around His presence and prioritize His presence in every area of your life. We call this “practicing God’s presence,” and we have a blog all about what that means and how you can start living from the place of God’s presence daily.

#2 Intentional Faith

Actively seek God for spiritual growth, maturity, and a deeper relationship with Him through prayer, worship, and the study of the Bible. This is intentional faith. It’s where you find your confidence in God, His Person, and the integrity of His Word.

#3 Transformation through the Word of God.

Transformation through the Word of God. The Word transforms you and empowers you. It renews your mind. The Word of God is life, and the truth of His Word sets you free.

#4 Empowerment of The Holy Spirit

When we have a true relationship with Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we have the Holy Spirit. We don’t always live a life surrendered to Him even though He dwells on the inside of us and wants to empower us. The Holy Spirit gives us strength and power to do the Lord’s will. He wants to be your guide, your friend, and your comforter. We will go deeper into the Holy Spirit; in the meantime, we have a free book recommendations guide to help you learn more about the Person of the Holy Spirit and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

#5 Authentic Community

Authentic community is essential to knowing God more because you learn to live out God’s love with others, where you are challenged and pushed to grow. Find a community in which you can be safe, seen, and heard, where you can be transparent and vulnerable. God never intended for us to do life alone or in isolation. It’s in a community that you gain the support you need to overcome the challenges of pornography, doubt, unbelief, masturbation, and spiritual warfare, to name a few.

#6 Strive for excellence in Christ.

Excellence is the quality of excelling and being the very best at something. Striving for excellence should be a part of all we do (Colossians 3:23–24). For example, many things get in the way of excellence, including laziness, shortcuts, and carelessness.

No one is good at everything, but we’re all good at something. Find your gifts and use them with excellence.

Everyday Practices for Inviting God into Your Life

I am more practical than I would like to admit because the temptation is to rely on step-by-step guides and plans more than surrendering to the Holy Spirit. We must be careful not to rely on our plans more than the Holy Spirit. Plans are not bad or wrong, but our ultimate reliance must be upon the Holy Spirit. As we continue, remember to invite God in so you can get His plans and guidance.

How to Start Reading the Bible (Even If You Feel Lost)

The Bible can be intimidating. It’s huge—66 books—full of history, principles, miracles, and so much more. But start small. Take your time. If you spend three weeks on one verse or chapter, then allow the Holy Spirit to use that to minister to you. Clearly, you are there for a reason. You don’t have to rush because this is a time between you and God.

There are so many different methods for starting to read the Bible. I want to share a popular one that I know many people have used. All the methods are a guide to help you understand and apply Scripture to your lives.

The SOAP Method is a proven and effective approach to Bible study built on four practices:

The Soap Method

Scripture, reading a passage and writing out 1-2 specific verse by hand.

Observation, asking questions of the text (who, what, where, when, how).

Application, considering how you should respond to what you’ve read.

Prayer, thanking God for what he’s shown you, and for his empowerment as you seek to live faithfully in light of what you’ve discovered in your time in the Word.

The SOAP Method is an amazing practice that helps you begin reading and applying the Word to your life. You will recognize the desire to go deeper into the Word as you continue.

Simple Prayers for Inviting God into Your Life: Talking to God Without Fear

As we talk about inviting God into your life, below are some prayers you can start with and allow the Holy Spirit to expand them. The first prayer is essential because you invite the Holy Spirit in and yield to His guidance on what to pray. You will notice He will give you the words to pray and to say.

• Holy Spirit, help me to pray.

• Lord, I am a sinner; forgive me, for I have sinned against you.

• Father, enable me to do Your will.

• Teach me your ways, O Lord.

• Lord, open my eyes to see you more clearly, love and follow you more.

• Lord, open my eyes to understand Your Word, Your ways, and Your plans for me. Help me follow you and give my life in service to you and others.

How to Recognize God’s Voice in Everyday Life

God speaks with us in various ways, including the Bible, dreams, prayer, circumstances, and through other people. However, not every voice we hear is God’s. Here are a few questions to check the voice you’re hearing:

• Does it align with His Word?

• Does it align with His Character?

• Does it lead to Sin?

• Does it convict in love or condemnation and guilt?

• Does it bring encouragement and truth?

• Do others confirm it?

How Inviting God into Your Life Helps You Overcome Doubt and Strengthen Your Faith

The enemy would love for you to doubt the Word and the process because it keeps you separate from truth and freedom. The truth is God wants to help you. He’s ready to strengthen and help you; he doesn’t expect perfection from you. How do we strengthen our faith and overcome our doubt? Romans 10:17 tells us, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The key is the Word of God. We must fall in love with the Word. As we learned in our daily sustenance post, Jesus sustains us daily. He is nourishment for our souls, and He fulfills our deepest hunger. As you begin to speak the Word, you begin to speak His goodness in your life, and you will start to doubt your doubts. Do your part to build your faith; the Lord will do the rest to transform you.

What’s the Secret to Intimacy?

“Give God time to make you and refine you. The secret to intimacy is TIME! Give God time, invest time in His glory, His Presence, in prayer, worship and His Word.” – Apostle Joshua Selman

Getting to know someone takes time; it’s a process. Likewise, with God, the relationship is developed by spending time with Him and getting to know His Character, ways, and nature. The secret to intimacy is time, time with Him. I urge you to spend time with God because He wants to spend time with you, and it’s where you experience a life-changing transformation
