How to Bear Fruit That Lasts: The Key to Spiritual Growth

At Life in God, our mission is to help you surrender, dwell, and abide in God’s presence. One of the clearest places Jesus teaches us how to live this out is in John 15.

There, He reveals a transforming truth: when you abide in Him, you will bear fruit. While the quality and quantity of the fruit may differ, the presence of fruit will be inevitable.

“Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit… Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:2–5 ESV

Let’s explore what that means for your life today.

You Can’t Bear Fruit Without the Vine

Biblically, to abide means to remain, to dwell, to stay faithfully connected in relationship with God. It’s not passive, it’s intentional and daily.

When you abide in Jesus, He abides in you—and when that relationship is truly cultivated, fruit will grow. Because fruit bearing isn’t just possible—it’s the natural outcome of life in God. It’s not random. It’s not optional.

Fruit can be understood as people’s outward actions. Fruit can be seen in your:

  • Character (Galatians 5:22–23)
  • Conduct (Matthew 7:16)
  • Contribution to others (Colossians 1:10)

Jesus makes it clear: you cannot bear fruit by yourself. You need Him as your source of strength, nourishment, and life. Just as a branch can’t survive apart from the vine, you can’t thrive spiritually apart from Him.

The Purpose of Your Life Is to Bear Fruit, Not Just Look Alive

It’s not enough to have leaves—your life is meant to bear fruit. In the garden of Eden (Genesis 1:28), God’s original command was to be fruitful and multiply. You were created to be productive, purposeful, and spiritually fruitful.

This includes:

  • The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5)
  • The fruit of good works (Colossians 1:10)
  • The fruit of power (Acts 1:8)

God doesn’t want you to simply appear spiritual—He wants visible evidence of transformation.

What Kind of Fruit Are You Producing?

Here’s something worth asking—maybe even wrestling with: What kind of fruit is your life producing?

Whether you realize it or not, you are already bearing fruit. The real issue is what kind:

  • Is it the fruit of fear, laziness, or compromise?
  • Or the fruit of love, faith, and faithfulness?

Whatever you abide in will show up in your life.

In the end, your life will always reflect what you’re abiding in.
If you aren’t intentional, it’s easy to keep abiding in the world—operating from old habits and limited thinking. And when that’s the case, your fruit will reflect it.

But when you intentionally abide in Christ, something changes. Your life begins to produce Kingdom fruit—eternal, meaningful, and enduring.

Fruit That Reflects the Spirit, Not the World

Abiding isn’t just a spiritual concept—it’s a daily decision. We shared some simple, practical abide in me daily practices in our last blog that you can start doing today.

When you abide in Jesus, you remain deeply and securely connected to Him. And that connection bears fruit in every area of your life: in your relationships, your thoughts, your goals, and even your emotional responses.

The vine-branch picture emphasizes two things:

  1. Complete dependence
  2. Constant connection

Just like a branch draws energy, life, and nourishment from the vine, we draw everything from Jesus. It’s from Him that our lives begin to produce lasting fruit.

“Produce” means to bring forward, to exhibit, to make manifest. That’s what your life is meant to do.

Think about the fruit you are producing, and the fruit God wants to produce in you—maybe it’s that business idea you’ve been contemplating, the fruit of forgiveness, or even a call to give back and volunteer. What is God calling you to produce?

Pruned to Bear More Fruit: A Preview of What’s Next

Jesus says that every branch that bears fruit is pruned so that it can bear more fruit. That pruning process may feel uncomfortable, but it’s part of God’s loving refinement. The redeeming of your character and life. It’s the process on sanctification.

One of means by which pruning happens? The Word of God.

Next week, we’ll dive into that essential truth in Part 3 of our Abide Series:
Why Pruning Hurts—and Why It’s Exactly What You Need

How Will You Respond?

Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what kind of fruit your life is producing. Then, take one step today to deepen your connection to Jesus—through worship, Scripture, or prayer. You are called to bear fruit—and in Him, it is inevitable.
