The Courage to Abide in God When Life Feels Heavy

I don’t know about you, but this month has been heavy. Not just in the topics we’ve been exploring here on the blog, but in life itself. The world feels heavy. Work is heavy. Circumstances are heavy.

In the midst of all that weight, it’s my prayer that these posts have offered you encouragement—a reminder that you are not alone, and that God is with you.

Apart from Him you can do nothing. So, today, we’re diving into what it means to abide—a core part of our mission here. But before we go there, I want to ask you a question my Pastor asked us:

What is life supposed to look like after you get saved but before you get to heaven?

So many of us think the cross is the destination—but the cross is not the arrival place. It’s the starting point.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” – John 10:10

There is so much more available to you in Christ than what you may currently be walking in. Do you believe that? Or have you settled into thinking that defeat and discouragement are all there is?

But what if I told you that Jesus came to give us deliverance beyond sin and Satan—and that deliverance is found in abiding?

Abide: The Invitation

Let’s look at Jesus’ words in John 15:1

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser… Abide in me, and I in you… apart from me you can do nothing…”

I highly encourage you to read the full passage and mediate on it and allow the Lord to reveal truth to you.

Biblically, to abide means to remain, to dwell, to stay faithfully connected in relationship with God. It’s not passive, it’s intentional and daily.

But let’s be honest: abiding isn’t always easy and it may even take courage on your part to remain. Especially when God feels silent or when life feels burdensome and uncertain. Our natural instinct is to flee discomfort, to escape suffering, to fix the heaviness.

But God doesn’t just want to pull you out of hard places. He wants to meet you in them.

“We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope…” – Romans 5:3–5

Why Does God Want You to Abide?

Because He wants to comfort, console, and refine you—right in the middle of your difficulty—through the power and love of Jesus Christ.

It’s my prayer today that as you embark on the abiding journey, God would turn your weakness into strength. Because apart from Him—you truly can do nothing.

God Is Your Strength

Belief in God is not a recipe for an easy life. But He is your strength in times of difficulty, depression, and discouragement. And when you abide in Him, you become unshakable.

You won’t be tossed around by suffering, by fading trends, highlight reels, by fear or doubt.

Practical Strategies for Abiding

So how do we practice abiding in God’s presence—even when life is heavy?

1. Show up anyway

Even when you don’t feel like it, press into God. Worship. Pray. Read the Word. Show up honestly—messy, tired, uncertain—and trust that He will meet you there. He will strengthenfill, and fuel you.

2. Take a risk

Do something uncomfortable, something different. What is God asking of you in this season? Step out in faith. Be willing to look foolish for Him. If you want to see something you’ve never seen before, do something you’ve never done. Be willing to abandon everything for Him.

3. Change your dominate thought

Let the Word become your default. Let His promises become louder than your problems. Instead of replaying your past, fears, insecurity, discouragements, rehearse what God says about your present and your future. Abiding starts with what you agree with in your mind.

You don’t have to believe every thought you think. Align your mind with heaven. Fill it with truth until truth becomes your dominant thought—not fear, not insecurity, not what you see but what He says.

I encourage you today: abide. Remain in God with bold and unshakable faith—even in uncertainty. His presence is not just a place of refuge. It’s the place of power, peace, and purpose.

You were not made to live a life of defeat. Which we will be talking about soon on the blog because so many are living defeated when God has way more for you.

You were made to dwell, overcome, and thrive—through Him.
