This blog is all about how dependency changes our affections.
We live in a world full of noisy voices pulling at our attention, culture shaping our desires, and distractions demanding our devotion. Yet Scripture reminds us that in the last days, people’s affections will become noticeable (2 Timothy 3). But we are called to live differently.
As followers of Christ, we are not called to blend in with the culture or conform to the environment we’re in. We’re called to be completely opposite, to live dependent on God, not driven by our own passions.
Dependency cannot exist where competing desires rule. When various passions lead our hearts, dependency dies.
Godlessness in the Last Days
Scripture tells us there will be godlessness in the last days.
“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”
— 2 Timothy 3:1–5 ESV
Paul lists these characteristics not to condemn the world, but to warn believers what happens when dependency on God is lost and self becomes the center. Let’s look at a few of these and what they look like today:
- Lovers of self: A culture obsessed with self-expression and self-promotion. Everything revolves around “me.”
- Lovers of money: The chase for wealth becomes the measure of worth, even at the expense of peace and integrity.
- Proud and arrogant: A mindset that no longer reveres God’s authority but glorifies human achievement.
- Ungrateful and unholy: Gratitude disappears when people feel entitled; holiness fades when compromise becomes comfort.
- Without self-control: Impulses rule. We satisfy every craving immediately, rather than bringing our desires under the Spirit’s discipline.
- Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God: Entertainment, comfort, and indulgence replace time in His presence.
- Having the appearance of godliness but denying its power: A form of faith without transformation—religion without relationship.
Dependency calls us to a higher standard. It leads us out of self-pleasing patterns and back into a life of surrender.

Fleeing Worthless Passions
God’s Word gives us a clear command in contrast to those behaviors:
“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”
— 2 Timothy 2:22 ESV
Dependency doesn’t just help you run from something; it helps you run toward Someone. It shifts your affections from the temporary to the eternal, calling you to chase what truly satisfies.
Righteousness. Faith. Love. Peace. These are the fruits of a life surrendered to God.
Money, Sex, and Power
These are the great idols of our generation. They promise satisfaction but never deliver peace.
The moment you realize that what’s in your heart cannot save you, you begin to see how worthless those idols really are.
God calls us to repentance, to turn our faces away from worthless things and set our hearts toward Him. He’s looking for people who will be faithful to Him, just as He’s been faithful to us.
“Turn from your idols and renounce all your detestable practices.” — Ezekiel 14:6
Ask yourself: What am I setting my heart on, self-gain or eternal fruit? What holds my affection, what benefits me, or what glorifies Him?

When Dependency Redirects Desire
Here’s the beautiful part: dependency doesn’t just change what you do; it changes what you want.
When you begin to depend on God, your longings shift. You start desiring the things of His Kingdom more than the pleasures of the world. You stop striving for approval, position, or self-pleasure and start resting in His plan.
Your heart softens toward His will, and your desires begin to align with His.
The Weight and the Joy of Dependency
Dependency comes with both great joy and great pressure. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
Think about the blessings you once prayed for. Maybe a promotion, a relationship, or a financial breakthrough. Each blessing carries a burden: responsibility, stewardship, humility. Yet when the blessing comes from God, you don’t carry it alone.
Dependency teaches you how to rest even under pressure. It reminds you that the same God who blesses you also sustains you.
Where Affection Begins to Transform
Dependency keeps you at the feet of Jesus. And at His feet is where your affections begin to change.
It’s there that your heart learns what truly matters. It’s there that you begin to love what He loves, to desire what He desires, and to grow in the fruit of His Spirit.
As you continue this journey of dependency, open your heart to the Holy Spirit. Let Him reshape your affections. Let the dead, worthless things fall away so that your love for God can take root and bloom.
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” — Colossians 3:2

A Prayerful Pause
Dependency isn’t weakness, it’s worship.
It’s the posture that transforms your affections and teaches your heart to trust again.
I pray this blog encourages you to reset your affections, your mind, your attitude, and your life in the name of Jesus.
May God transform you into His image, an image bearer who reflects His heart, His holiness, and His love in everything you do.
May you find joy at His feet, where desire is refined and love is renewed.
Practice This Week
Each morning, before you check your phone, pray:
“Lord, help me desire You more than anything else today.”
Then spend five minutes in stillness, no music, no phone, just sitting in His presence.
If this encouraged you, share it with someone who needs to be reminded that dependency is beautiful. You can also join our Life in God email community for devotionals and resources that help you practice God’s presence daily.
