There comes a point in everyone’s journey when the plans, resources, and people around you fall short. And in that place where it’s just you and God, dependency is no longer optional. It becomes the anchor.
Learning the discipline of dependency comes with highs and lows, with waiting and moving forward, and often both at once. It’s my prayer that this series strengthens and encourages you through both the difficult and the easier times.
Lately, I’ve encountered a dimension of God I’ve never experienced before, and I’m praying the same for you and your family. Because there truly is more to walking with God. More than what meets the eye. But that “more” is only found through dependency, not on a plan B, not on money, not on people, but on God Himself, the true and living God who sees and knows all things.
Here’s the reality we must come to understand and believe: God is present even in our lowest, deepest, and hardest moments. When the weight and pressure of the future feel overwhelming, when we’re fixated on what we lack or what’s ahead, He is right there with us.
He’s not so far above that He cannot relate. That’s exactly what Jesus modeled: He came in the flesh. He suffered, grieved, and felt pain. And because of that, He understands. He sees you. He hears you.
How to Start Learning to Lean on God
The first step is simple but powerful and sometimes challenging: acknowledge what you’re feeling.

What you feel is real and bringing it before God matters. When I acknowledge what’s stirring in my heart and then go to the Word of God, something begins to shift. This isn’t a cliché for me; it’s been tested. Time and time again, when I’ve opened my Bible, God has enlightened my heart with understanding.
He begins to comfort us through His Word. It’s then that we start to remember and receive promises.
And I want to encourage you: try it. Acknowledge what you are feeling and seek the Word of God for answers, for comfort, for peace, and even for venting.
If you’re unsure where to start, here are a few places to begin:
- 1 & 2 Thessalonians — for encouragement and hope.
- Jeremiah 33 — for God’s promises and faithfulness.
- Psalm 119 — for a reminder of the power of God’s Word.
- Psalm 105 — for a call to remember His works.
Then, pray. If prayer has been an afterthought, I encourage you to awaken it again. Talk to the Father who wants to hear you, who delights in answering you. Pour out your heart to Him. Ask Him to help you. Ask Him for understanding.
The discipline of dependency is where faith grows roots—deep, steady, and unshakable.
Next, believe. Come into agreement with His Word.
God is with you, and the Holy Spirit will empower you to walk in dependency even when it’s hard and your heart feels heavy.
A Personal Testimony
During a season when we were buying a home and everything on paper said it wasn’t possible, God illuminated Psalm 105:44 to me:
“And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil.” — Psalm 105:44 (ESV)
I began to declare, “Lord, we will take possession of the land. It’s ours.” That promise took root in my heart like a seed and began to grow like a flower.
Here’s what I want you to understand: God can and wants to use His Word to refresh you, encourage you, and help you take hold of His promises.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness,” – 2 Timothy 3:16
And here’s the beautiful part: sometimes your spirit will receive something your mind can’t fully comprehend. That’s what happened to me. My spirit knew something I didn’t have the language or capacity to explain, but I was strengthened, encouraged, and fed.
Acknowledge. Pray. Believe.
Why does this matter?
- It’s not a weakness to acknowledge your pain — it’s honesty (Hebrews 10:22)
- It’s biblical to pray — “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
- It’s powerful to believe — “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” — Matthew 19:26.
Dependency is built daily in prayer, in the Word, and in worship. This is the foundation of your life, your faith, and the doorway to encounters with God.

One More Thing to Remember
It’s in the quiet breaking, in the stretching and waiting, that dependency is born and roots are deepened. While it may feel like weakness, it’s actually strength. This is your starting place learning to lean on God fully in hard seasons by acknowledging, praying, and believing.
For the next few weeks, I want to talk more about dependency and trust, because God has been encountering me in this area, and I believe this is a timely word for both you and me.
I pray this confirms what God has already been whispering to you in your personal time with Him.
Even in the waiting, lean on Him.
During uncertainties, depend on Him.
And in the heaviness, trust Him.
Because He is near.
The discipline of dependency is learned in quiet rooms, waiting seasons, and surrendered hearts.
Welcome to the beauty of dependency, let’s walk through this series together.
