How To Start Thriving Where You’re Planted (The Daniel Blueprint Part 6)

Are you thriving where you are today or just surviving? Are you blossoming or withering? Answer honestly. Personally, it depends on the area. Some areas I know I am thriving in, and others I need to cultivate a little more. If you don’t feel or witness the evidence of you thriving or blossoming, I pray this read encourages your heart.

Before Daniel became the man in the lion’s den, before the visions and the prophecies, he was just a teenager. A really sharp, well-prepared teenager who got uprooted from everything familiar and dropped into a completely foreign world. And guess what, he didn’t just survive. He thrived. And so can you!

Here’s what we know about him from the jump: Daniel came from a noble family in Israel. He was handsome, quick-witted, eager to learn, and already sharp before any of this happened. We see in Daniel 1 that the Babylonians didn’t pick just anybody; Daniel had to meet their criteria even to be considered. He already had something in him.

The Challenge of Starting Over

But then everything changed. I’m talking, new country, new language, new food, new name, new instructors, new curriculum. Phew, a whole new life, and he didn’t ask for any of it.

Can I just sit with that for a second? I think about first-year college students leaving home for the first time, still trying to figuring out who they are, making decisions without mom or dad down the hall, navigating friendships, freedom, and all of it at once. It’s tough.

Even our military families who move every few years, always the new kid, starting new jobs, building new communities, and always having to start over.

And I think about those who didn’t choose their new normal, maybe a divorce, or someone running from something, or even a circumstances that forced a fresh start. New is hard. New can be disorienting at times.

Sometimes, newness can feel like a loss even when it’s actually a setup. I believe Daniel knew that feeling. In the midst of it, he didn’t isolate; he put in the work and built relationships.

Don’t Isolate, BUILD!

One of the things I love most about Daniel is that he didn’t pull back from the world around him. He asked for permission, sought favor, built genuine relationships with the Chief Official, the guards, the commanders, and, eventually, four different kings. Four.

Daniel 2:14 says he approached his supervisors with “wisdom and tact.” Daniel wasn’t combative, but he wasn’t passive either. He was wise, relational, and rooted. We see him respecting the authority around him while keeping God as his ultimate authority. He didn’t compromise his faith to fit in, and God honored that. A couple of weeks ago, we talked about How to Stand Firm Under Cultural Pressure and we shared 3 Lessons from Daniel’s life.

That’s the balance so many of us are trying to find, right? How do I show up fully in spaces that don’t share my values? I know I struggled with that for many years. Especially being a young soldier and constantly on the move. I wish I knew what I know now then. Daniel shows us: you build relationships, you stay true to you, and you trust God to do the rest.

Spiritual Disciplines in the Life of Daniel

He had a small group.

I just need to point that out. Daniel didn’t do this alone. He had his people, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, walking through it with him. Community matters. Find your people.

He has a resolve.

Daniel knew who he was and what he would not compromise on, and he remained true to it. He upheld it. Do you know yourself? Are you happy with the version of who you are today?

He stayed connected to God, even when it cost him.

Daniel fasted, prayed, studied Scripture, and he didn’t do these things casually or conveniently; he did them consistently, even when his life was literally on the line (read Chapter 6).

His spiritual disciplines weren’t a performance. They were the source. The reason he could stand with such confidence in every room he walked into was because he was rooted in something, Someone, deeper than any circumstance.

That’s what we call, daily connection with God, almost like daily touchpoints. It wasn’t the bonus to Daniel’s story—rather, the foundation of it.

God’s Preparation Behind the Scenes

Daniel walked into Babylon already prepared. His upbringing, his character, his faith, all of it had been quietly forming him for a moment he didn’t even know was coming. And when the pressure hit, what was inside him showed up.

Every time he was examined by his instructors, by kings, by circumstances, he was found ten times better than those around him. Not because he was perfect, but because he was prepared and he was faithful.

That’s a testimony. And honestly? It makes me wonder what God is quietly preparing you for right now.

What part of Daniel’s story resonates with you most? I’d love to know. ☕
