I am super excited to talk about purpose this week. I believe the way we begin to walk in purpose is through surrendering, dwelling, and abiding. I have felt a transition in my spirit since we moved to Alabama, and with some recent events in my life, I feel that tugging a lot more. So this week I want to sit with a topic the Lord has revealed to me, and I want to give you some insight into how the Lord speaks to me and how He revealed this topic to my heart.
How the Lord Revealed This to Me
First, I was reading the Word. I am rereading the Bible in a year, and each recommended scripture for that day has been spot on, exactly what I need. So as I was reading in John 18, the Holy Spirit illuminated to me verse 37, specifically 3 words mentioned twice in one verse.
The next morning, our 16 year old was responsible for teaching our morning lesson. We have family Bible time in the morning, and this was her second lesson. Her topic was “Ministry Through Purpose.” (I would really love for her to write and do an episode on this one day.) That’s when I remembered those 3 words from the night before, and I thought, I believe the Lord is reminding me of my purpose. But let’s keep going, and I’ll come back to that.
Then Sunday, our pastor taught a message on how to make your dreams come true. That solidified it for me.
Here’s a bonus for you: when you spend daily time with the Lord, the message on Sunday should be confirmation of what the Lord has already been speaking to you in your secret place.
The 3 Words
So what are those 3 words the Holy Spirit illuminated to me? “For this purpose.”
Jesus is speaking in this verse, and He says, “For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” John 18:37 ESV
This verse tells me that Jesus knew His identity. He understood the reason for His birth, it was bigger than Mary and Joseph, and He knew what His assignment was on earth. I want to have an awareness of my identity to the depth that Jesus did.
Christ Is the Blueprint
Christ is the blueprint, the one we are to pattern our lives after. Jesus tells us in scripture that we will do greater works after He leaves, and this confirms that we have purpose and are assigned something.
In real time, I’m just amazed: it’s approximately 8.3B people in this world who have been chosen by God the Creator to be a human being, and they all have an assignment and purpose to advance the Kingdom of God, to reach their sphere, or what’s in proximity to them, and to point people to Jesus.
We have a culture and an enemy that’s wooing so many people from their true identity. I’m reminded of a bomb my pastor dropped recently: the fastest growing religion is humanism. We want to be the center of it all, focused on our own happiness, abandoning anything that’s not serving “me.” It’s all about self, self-righteousness, self-promotion, independence. We have lost our true identity and our reasoning for our existence here on earth.
The Delay Is Mercy
Thank God for the delay in Jesus’ return, so that many can still turn to Him and come to know Him. It’s the Lord’s mercy toward us, giving us an opportunity to come to Him. But God wants to do more than keep us from sinning, He wants to fulfill His purpose through us. You are His plan A for the place, season, and time you’re in.
Christ came so that He will model how we are to live, so we can see how to live and walk out our purpose as Christ did.

We Are Saved for Purpose
We are saved for purpose, for good works. He formed a plan for us. We have a calling, a plan, and an assignment for our lives, and it’s not to our credit because we cannot take credit for it.
What is your calling?
There is a divine plan in place for that calling to be fulfilled, and there is an assignment it’s to achieve, to bear fruit whichmeans results.
Here’s the thing, it’s going to take a risk, and it’s going to cost you something. (We will talk about that next week. What’s the risk of our calling?) So come back.
Ephesians 2:8-10
We are saved for good works, serving and spreading the gospel. What makes us unique is the way we share the gospel.
I believe my purpose is to share the gospel in creative ways, and Life in God is one of those pathways by which I walk in that purpose. Unique pathways to point people to Jesus.
Ministry Through Purpose
My daughter’s lesson made this so clear to me: ministry is about serving people. We are to serve, in whatever capacity the Lord is calling you to, worship, food banks, outreach, finance, writing, hospitality, etc. Whatever way the Lord is calling you to serve, do that. That is your “through,” which I’m calling our pathway, it’s the path by which we are serving.
And what’s the purpose, the intent, the assignment? To point people to Jesus. To demonstrate the love of God. To be in relationship and community with someone.
Serving in the church is one thing, but God calls us outside the four walls of the church. And you begin to meet so many different people, and when you are able to relate and connect with people of different ethnicities, backgrounds, class, etc., you have the advantage, not only in your reach, but within yourself, because those same people help you grow internally. And it’s a special reflection of the image of God who created them.
For This Purpose, God didn’t just save you. He called you to live with purpose, bear fruit, and glorify Him.
Your Charge This Week
Today, I charge you to live the adventure of walking out your dreams with God. Start with what you have. Be faithful with what you have. And watch Him do more than you could think or imagine.
**Weekly Challenge:** Set aside 15 minutes this week, no phone, no distractions, and ask God to finish this one statement for you, “For This Purpose I have Called You to…” If you feel led, we’d love to hear how God finished the statement for you.
