The cost of your calling is the one conversation most of us avoid having with God. You were made for a purpose. The Holy Spirit illuminated three words to me recently: “For this purpose.” They’re found in John 18:37, and they have been speaking to me ever since.
Jesus is the one speaking in this verse. He says, “For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
This verse tells me that Jesus knew His identity. He understood the reason for His birth. It was bigger than Mary and Joseph, and He knew what His assignment was on earth. I want to have an awareness of my identity to the depth that Jesus did.
So here’s my question for you today: do you know your purpose? What is your calling? Do you know?
If not, that’s okay for now. But ask God. Ask Him to reveal it, and ask Him to reveal the cost, the risk you will have to pay for it.
There is a divine plan in place for that calling to be fulfilled. There is an assignment it’s meant to achieve, to bear fruit, which means results.
Christ Is the Blueprint
Christ is the blueprint, the one we are to pattern our lives after. Jesus tells us in scripture that we will do greater works after He leaves, and this confirms that we have purpose, that we are assigned something (John 14:12).
Here’s the thing: walking in that purpose is going to take a risk, and it’s going to cost you something.
The Cost Will Look Different, but It Will Cost You

This cost will look different for all of us, but for every one of us, it will cost something. Every “yes” to God comes with a cost of your calling attached.
It will cost you leaving what’s familiar and leaving fear behind. It’s about trusting God: trusting His timing, His plans, His purpose, and seeking Him above all else.
It will cost you the renewing of your mind, walking in reckless abandon of all you’ve known, to follow God fully.
It will cost you leaving distractions behind and instead inquiring of and learning from the Lord. You have to learn new things. You have to understand the neuroscience of it all, the way your mind has to be retrained to walk in something new.
Your calling is going to cost belief. It will cost you believing that God has given you the vision, that He is with you, that He will rain down abundance, that He will answer, that He will provide. It’s all about that trust and that belief.
One decision can change your entire life. One risk can change your entire life. The cost of your calling is the price of your purpose.
Made for Good Works
Ephesians 2:8-10 reminds us that we are saved for good works, for serving and spreading the gospel. What makes each of us unique is the way we carry out that calling, the way we share the gospel.
I believe my purpose is to share the gospel in creative ways, and Life in God is one of those pathways by which I walk that out.
There is a cost to building something, to speaking to people and a cost of my time, my resources, my energy, my belief, my boldness, and so much more. But I have this awareness: Jesus is with me. This vision is His. I cannot do it without Him, and if He is with me, then all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).
So I’ll ask you again: what is your calling, and are you ready to pay the cost? The cost of your calling will always be less than the cost of never walking in it.
