What if I told you that the Lord answers us immediately, and we actually lack the awareness to see it? I believe you’ve already received an answer from God. You just may not have recognized it yet.
It may not be the way you thought, or even asked for, but it’s in Him. To know God is to know Him personally and intimately. And because you know Him, that means you have direct access to Him. But here’s the thing: He alone is enough. His presence alone is enough. His ear alone is enough. God alone meets our needs because He’s everything we ever need or desire, and we don’t even realize it.
I’ve had this thought sitting with me for a couple weeks now, but I haven’t been focused enough to let the Lord unpack it for me until recently.
The Presence That Meets You
In real time, I’m learning this. When I get into the presence of God, I could be distressed, overwhelmed, tired, or even joyful, and when I show up, His presence alone meets me. It’s almost as if Him just being with me is enough.
Here’s what that looked like for me recently: I may ask for finances to align to make something happen, but He may give me direction or peace immediately, because ultimately what I needed was peace, peace and trust to know that He will provide, or even direction that leads to the answer of multiplication. I asked for one thing. He met me with what I actually needed.
Here’s what I believe: He knows what we actually need, and He provides. Not always what we asked for. Always what we need.
Why His Presence Is Enough
It’s enough because of who He is. He’s the Supreme being, the Creator and Ruler of all that is; the self-existent One who is perfect in power, goodness, and wisdom. He is NOT like you and me. He has no flaws. He is Lord.
And because He is Lord over all things, His presence carries all things. Strength, resources, courage, wisdom, direction,it’s all in Him. He meets our needs immediately. We’re the ones who struggle to see it.
I wonder if God is calling us to Him, plainly, simply, to Him. That He alone is enough for us.
He is our greatest answer.It’s my prayer that we would know that He alone is our greatest answer. That He alone is enough for us.
How Do We Practically Inquire of the Lord?
If He’s already answering, the question becomes: how do we position ourselves to see it?
Scripture shows us a pattern. Here’s what it looks like to inquire of the Lord.
1. Seek the Scripture. Search the Word for understanding, truth, and guidance. Scripture is
the primary way God speaks to us.
“Yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like
silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:3-5, ESV
2. Ask questions in community. Jesus demonstrates asking and answering questions to reveal deeper truth. And He demonstrated how to be in community by spending time with each other.
“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you
say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.’” Matthew 16:13-17, ESV
3. Prayer. Prayer is one of the primary ways we inquire of the Lord. Prayer is communication with God, and there are many ways we can pray: praying in our heart like Hannah, praying out loud like David, writing letters like Paul.
Each of these, Scripture, community, and prayer, is done through surrendering, dwelling, and abiding with the Lord.When we read the Word, it empowers us to surrender. We recognize the areas we need to lay aside. We begin to see we need to live from the
presence of God, to cultivate the secret place, to live in community, and to abide through prayer when it’s difficult and when we are faced with challenges.
This is the beginning of encountering the Lord firsthand for yourself.
Practice the Presence
I want to encourge you to pay attention to the moments when you’re tempted to immediately ask God for something, when that moment comes and before you ask, pause. Then I want you to inquire of the Lord like David did, that can look like, opening the Word, calling a friend and talk it through, and/or sit in prayer without rushing to the request. Then watch for how He meets you, not necessarily with the answer you expected, but with what you actually need.
Abide in This
He alone is enough. Not His answers. Not His timing on our terms. Him. If you’re carrying a need this week, don’t just ask and move on. Inquire. Sit with Him. Let Him unpack it for you the way He’s been unpacking this for me.
