How to Dream Again: Surrender, Dwell, and Abide in Your Purpose

I have been reading a book that is in such alignment with dreams, mindset, purpose, and identity. Since we have been talking about purpose, I want to share that book with you, along with a video that has been such an encouragement to me. I believe both will help shift your mindset as you walk in your dreams and purpose. This blog is an encouragement, and maybe even a confirmation to dream again.

The first is The Life-Changing Art of Self-Brain Surgery: Connecting Neuroscience and Faith to Radically Transform Your Life by W. Lee Warren, MD. I’m not done reading it yet, I’m still early in it, but I can already feel the rewiring happening in my understanding of my own brain. It’s wild. The book asks, “What if it were possible for you to make structural changes to your own brain so it’s healthier and less prone to depression, anxiety, grief, worry, and other issues that make you unhappy and keep you stuck?” That’s the question it’s seeking to answer.

What if it were possible for you to make structural changes to your own brain so it’s healthier and less prone to depression, anxiety, grief, worry, and other issues that make you unhappy and keep you stuck?

The second is a video: If You Only Watch One Video This Week, Make It This One with Mel Robbins and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. I’ve watched it every day this week because it lines up so directly with this book and with the purpose we’ve been talking about. So I want you to watch this video too. Don’t even keep reading, just go watch it and come back next week. “If you’ve ever felt self-doubt, pressure, or like your best days are behind you, this one is for you.” Shelly-Ann does not hold back.

My friend, we all have a purpose, an assignment, a calling, and there is a cost to it. You were made for a purpose.

The Holy Spirit illuminated three words to me recently: “For this purpose.” They’re found in John 18:37, and they have been speaking to me ever since. I’ve been thinking about a question I asked a few weeks ago: ask God to finish this statement for you, “For this purpose I have called you to…” Once you receive that answer, decide that you are going to go on the adventure of walking out your dreams with God. Start with what you have. Be faithful with what you have. And watch Him do more than you could think or imagine. So start dreaming, my friend. Find your purpose, walk in your unique pathway and begin to dream again.

Pastor Eli defined dreams as “visions we have for what our life can be.” So what does Scripture tell you about what your life will be like with God?

You can find that answer in 1 Corinthians 2:9. This verse is talking about life with the Holy Spirit today, here on earth, right now. It’s not talking about when you get to heaven, it’s talking about the moment you give your life to Christ. You are immediately part of His family, and you have an inheritance that He has promised. You cannot earn it or deserve it, but you receive all the benefits that come with being a child of God. That means you have heaven’s resources, you have the wisdom of God, and you have direct access to the Supreme Being, the Creator of this world, the One who is perfect in power, goodness, and wisdom.

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Start To Dream Again with Surrender, Dwell, Abide

To begin dreaming, and dreaming rightly, I want to encourage you to surrender and delight in the Lord (Psalm 37:4). Surrender daily and put the Lord first. It’s in your surrender that you begin to lay aside your own plans, your self-ambition, your route to success, and start to see His instead.

Then dwell. Dwell in His presence, spend time with God, in His Word, in what He has said about you, in the burdens He’s placed on your heart, in the things you have deep compassion for. Find the characteristics that align with God’s heart. Maybe you have a passion for fighting for those who were wrongfully convicted, or for those in poverty, which aligns with God being just. Watch the dreams begin to flow.

And abide. When it takes longer than you think, or looks different than you expected, or comes very quickly and you didn’t consider the weight that comes with it, abide. Abide. Abide. Remain planted. Remain focused. Keep the main thing the main thing, which is the Lord. Don’t lose sight, don’t drift, but remain in constant fellowship with Him. Be in the center of His will above all else.

I pray you start dreaming again, and dream again with God.
