There’s a grace to skill and creativity, and we see that throughout Scripture. This week, I want to talk about something I don’t think we discuss enough in faith spaces, hobbies, craftsmanship, and the beautiful, sometimes messy act of making something with your hands.
Before we get into it, I want to plant two seeds from Scripture that changed my view of creativity.
The first is found in the book of Daniel. When King Nebuchadnezzar wanted the best and brightest brought into his service, God gave Daniel and his friends learning and skill in all literature and wisdom (Daniel 1:17). Their abilities weren’t just résumé credentials; they were a gift, a grace. God equipped them for the place they were called to stand.
The second is Bezalel and Oholiab. God called these men by name and filled them with His Spirit specifically to create, to work in gold, silver, bronze, wood, and stone (Exodus 31:2–5).
We know God is a creator, we see it in the beginning of Genesis. God made the earth, and He made us. He gave detailed, creative instructions for the tabernacle and the ark. He cared about craftsmanship, detail, and beauty. We even see creativity in Jesus. He was a carpenter, and He worked with His hands.
What is grace?
Grace is unmerited favor, love, and kindness, but also the enablement, power, or supernatural ability of God working through individuals to achieve His will and overcome limitations. My personal definition is that grace is the ability to do, the enabling and influence of the Holy Spirit.
I came to understand that God loves the arts.

You Are a Creative
Maybe you don’t think of yourself that way. But consider everything that counts as creativity:
Storytelling, Novels, Films, Painting, Sculpture, Embroidery, Music, Fashion, Mood boards, Interior design, Architecture, Photography, problem solving, all of it, something made out of nothing. And all of it reflects the image of the God who made everything out of nothing.
You are a creative by nature because you were made in the image of the Creator. (Genesis 1:26)
Find Your Thing
Life is busy, I know. You have a whole list of responsibilities before you even get to yourself (which it should not be). And I’m still going to encourage you to find something creative to do, because it is genuinely good for you.
Research shows that hobbies act as an stress-relieving escape, lowering your cortisol levels. So, engaging in activities you enjoy releases endorphins, your body’s natural feel-good chemicals. They build a sense of achievement, and reduce isolation when done in the community. They improve cognitive function and can even lower blood pressure and heart rate.
A hobby contributes to the quality of life and length of life. According to Mental Health America, “creative hobbies activate the parts of your brain that help you process emotions, create small wins and a sense of progress, bring your attention to the present, and help you build meaning and identity.” Creating art, painting, drawing, and crafting all help people work through emotions, get out of thought loops, and feel genuinely proud of something they made.
That’s therapy!
My Embrodiery Era
I came across hand embroidery during a major life transition. I needed an outlet. And sewing wasn’t working for your girl, so I stumbled into hand embroidery, and something clicked. It was small. I could do it on the go. It was unique and a little unexpected.
I’ve been doing hand embroidery for about four years now. And I’ll be honest, I’ve had to check myself, because perfectionism started to kick in, and I started stressing over the process instead of enjoying it. Don’t be like me. Enjoy the process, allow for mistakes. It doesn’t have to be perfect; the intent is to help your brain calm down and create something. That’s exactly what hand embroidery does for me when I’m not fighting it.

Fun Facts About Hand Embroidery: Hand embroidery can help alleviate stress, reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, give you a genuine sense of accomplishment, keep you off your screen, and even help brain recovery. That’s a lot of return on a thread and a needle.
Try It
You don’t need a whole plan or a lot of material to get started.
- Choose one creative activity and gather your supplies.
- Set a timer for 15–30 minutes.
- Focus on the process, not perfection. If you don’t know where to start, make a scribble and color in the sections. Draw abstract shapes. I’ve been seeing a lot of this on TikTok. Here’s a link.
- Check in with yourself afterward. How do you feel?
The Bottom Line
In the beginning, God created (Genesis 1:1-25). Then He made you in His image (Genesis 1:26). Then He breathed specific gifts of skill and artistry into you, people throughout Scripture, by name, and by His Spirit (Exodus 31:2-6). Your creativity is part of your identity; it’s part of who you are.
I want you to find something just for you. And it doesn’t have to be big, it just has to be yours. So my question for you today is, what is God calling you to create in this season?
